Question 762528

I would wager a good deal that your paper says "Perform the indicated operations". Be that as it may, use the FOIL process. FOIL stands for First, Outside, Inside, Last. Nothing particularly sacred about the order, it is just that OLIF, ILFO, nor any of the other combinations spell anything.

Here's how the process goes in general

*[tex \LARGE (ax\ +\ b)(cx\ +\ d)]

*[tex \LARGE ax] and *[tex \LARGE cx] are the Firsts. Multiply them together. *[tex \LARGE acx^2]

*[tex \LARGE ax] and *[tex \LARGE d] are the Outsides. Multiply them together. *[tex \LARGE adx]

*[tex \LARGE b] and *[tex \LARGE cx] are the Insides. Multiply them together. *[tex \LARGE bcx]

*[tex \LARGE b] and *[tex \LARGE d] are the Lasts. Multiply them together. *[tex \LARGE bd]

Add up the 4 terms, collecting like terms if any:

*[tex \LARGE acx^2\ +\ (ad\ +\ bc)x\ +\ bd]

Done, given correct arithmetic. Remember to consider the binding of the signs. If no sign, assume positive. The sign in front a term is bound to that term, e.g. in your problem, the second term in the second binomial is -5.
