Question 760979
The way I would solve this is by making a table like this
__________________________________________________________________
type (of coin)!V(value of coin)!A(amount of coin)!T(total of coin)
--------------!----------------!-----------------!----------------
quarters !0.25 !x(unknown) !0.25x(multiply V&A to get T)
--------------!----------------!-----------------!----------------
nickel !0.05 !x+2(two more !0.05(x+2)
                                nickels than
                                quarters)
__________________________________________________________________

From this chart we can make an equation (always from the (T)total section)
0.25x+0.05(x+2)=3.40 *the amount of coins are equal to 3.40 since the amount of nickels and quarter equal 3.40.
After making the equation solve for x, which will give you the amount of quarters......
BUT, you are not done yet, because you must also find how many nickels.
To find the amount of nickels simply use the equation x+2 from the amount (A) column. once you find the answer check with mine, which will be at the bottom of this)

Answer:

quarters:11
nickels:13 *sorry table is shifted, each column is defined by this !
