Question 743631
Cars A and B started simultaneously from opposite ends of a straight 315-mile road and travelled towards each other without stopping until they passed each other at location X.
The average speed of car B was 15 mph higher than car A's.

If car B's average speed is a third higher than that of Car A, how many miles of the road had car A travelled when the two cars passed each other?

D= 315

Car A speed = a mph.............x miles
car B speed = a+15..............315-x miles

(a+15)=(1/3)a+a
a+15=4a/3
4a/3-a=15
a=45................ speed of car A
speed of car B = 45+15=60 mph

Times are equal

x/45= (315-x)/60

60x=45(315-x)

60x=1575-45x
105x=14175
x=135

Car A has traveled = 135 miles
Car B has traveled the balance=>180 miles
