Question 741628
I agree with your first answer of y=7. HOwever, on the second problem, I get a=-3/2.

{{{1/(a+3) -a/(a^2-9)=2/(3-a)}}}

{{{1/(a+3) -a/((a-3)(a+3)) = -2/(a-3) }}}

Multiply both sides of the equation by (a-3)(a+3), which leaves:
{{{ a-3 - a = -2(a+3) }}}
{{{-3=-2a-6}}}

Add +6 to each side:
{{{3=-2a}}}

{{{a= -3/2}}}
