converting each fraction on the left hand side to give two equivalent fractions with the same denominators gives us
{{{1/3=8/24}}} and {{{3/8=9/24}}}
adding these fractions together gives us
{{{(8/24)+(9/24)=17/24}}} which is the correct answer.
there must be an error somewhere i suspect it should read {{{1/2}}} and not {{{1/3}}}
