Question 728823
<font face="Times New Roman" size="+2">

If the first guy runs 1 mile in 8 minutes, then he runs 1/8 mile in one minute. Likewise, the other guy runs 1/6 mile in one minute.

In *[tex \LARGE m] minutes the first guy will run *[tex \LARGE \frac{m}{8}] miles. In one less minute, i.e. *[tex \LARGE m\ -\ 1] minutes, the second guy will run *[tex \LARGE \frac{m\ -\ 1}{6}] miles. You just need to find the value of *[tex \LARGE m] that makes

*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \frac{m}{8}\ =\ \frac{m\ -\ 1}{6}]

And then calculate either *[tex \LARGE \frac{m}{8}] or *[tex \LARGE \frac{m\ -\ 1}{6}]. Hint: Cross-multiply and then solve the linear equation for *[tex \LARGE m]
