Question 63224

QUESTION:

what are the x- and y- intercepts for each equation
1. 5x-13y=20  2. 3x+8y=-24 3. x-4y=4

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ANSWER:

An x intercept is a point on the graph where y is zero

An y intercept is a point on the graph where x is zero.

For calculation,

X intercept,  put y = 0  and

Y intercept,  put x = 0

1. 5x-13y=20

For  x intercept, Put y =0

==> 5x -13*0 = 20

==> 5x = 20

==>  x = 20/5 = 4

For y intercept, put x = 0 in the given equation,

==> 5*0 -13y = 20

==>  -13 y = 20

==>   y = 20/ -13

2. 3x+8y= -24

x intercept,

==>  3x + 8*0 = -24

==>  3x  = -24

==>   x  = -24 / 3

==>   x  = -8

Y intercept,

==> 3*0+ 8y = -24

==> 8y = -24

==>  y = -24/8

==>  y = -3

3. x - 4y = 4

X intercept,

==>  x - 4*0 =4

==>  x = 4

Y intercept,

==> 0 - 4y = 4

==>   -4 y = 4

==>     y = 4 / -4

==>     y = -1

Hope you understood.
