Question 62948
a motorcycle leaves a gas station at an average speed of 20 mph. another motorcycle leaves the same gas station an hour later. the second motorcycle overtakes the first motorcycle in 4 hours. what is the rate of each motorcycle?
The formula for distance is {{{highlight(d=rt)}}}, d=distance, r=rate or speed, and t=time
For the first motorcycle:
r=20 m/h
t=1+4=5 h
d=(20)(5)=100 mi
For the second motorcycle:
r=x  (we don't know it)
t=4 h
d=4x
They both traveled the same distance, so we can set them = to each other.
4x=100
4x/4=100/4
x=25
The second motorcycle travels at: x=25 m/h
Happy Calculating!!!
