Question 688858

I am working on a math page. It says: Lorenzo needed to find 1/9 of 27. His friend Carla told him to write 1/9 as 3 to the -2 and 27 as 3 to the 3 to get 3 to the negative 6. Was Carla correct? Explain.
I think she's correct, but I'm not quite sure on how to explain it.

No, she wasn't correct!!!

If you multiply {{{1/9}}} by 27, doesn't that result in a value of 3?

If you calculate {{{3^-6}}}, doesn't this result in a value of {{{1/729}}}?

Are these two results the same? No, they're not!!! So how could she be correct?

{{{3^- 2 * 3^3}}} = {{{3^(- 2 + 3)}}}, or {{{3^1}}}, which equals: {{{highlight_green(3)}}}
