Question 687913
Isolate the square
1 - 2(x+5)^2 - 6 = 15
1 - 2(x+5)^2 - 6 + 6 = 15 + 6
1 - 2(x+5)^2 = 21
1 - 2(x+5)^2 - 1 = 21 - 1
-2(x+5)^2 = 20
{{{(-2(x+5)^2)/(-2) = 20/-2}}}
...
(x+5)^2 = -10
...
Take square root of both sides
{{{sqrt(x+5)^2}}} = +/- {{{sqrt(-10)}}}
x+5 = +/- {{{sqrt(-10)}}}
x+5 = +/- {{{i*sqrt(10)}}}
...
Isolate the variable
x = -5 +/- {{{i*sqrt(10)}}}
...
Two solutions
{{{highlight_green(x = -5 + i*sqrt(10))}}}
AND
{{{highlight_green(x = -5 - i*sqrt(10))}}}
