Question 683758

Dear tutor ,

Can you please help me on this word problem? Can you also shiw the steps, so I can understand how to do the problem myself?

Tom is now 25 years older than his son. In 20 years, Tom will be 5 yearz younger than 3 times his son's age. How old is Tom now?

Let Tom be N years old now.
N =__________

The 2nd sentence should read, "Tom will be 5 yearz [YEARS] younger than 3 times his son's [CURRENT/PRESENT] age." The problem will be solved based on this change.

As Tom's current age is N, then his son is currently N - 25 years-old

Also, N + 20 = 3(N - 25) - 5

N + 20 = 3N - 75 - 5

N - 3N = - 80 - 20

- 2N = - 100

N, or Tom's current age = {{{(- 100)/- 2}}}, or {{{highlight_green(50)}}}

You can do the check!!
