Question 672799

What two positive numbers when multiplied together also equal the sum of the same two numbers?
what I have tried so far:
xy=a
x+y=a
xy=x+y
x(y-1)=y
x=y/y-1

I know the answer is 2 but how do I show that?

If the answer is 2, then you/the problem failed to mention that the two numbers are the same. If you'd mentioned this, then we solve as follows:

Let the number be N

Then N(N) = N + N

{{{N^2 = 2N}}}

{{{N^2 - 2N = 0}}}

N(N - 2) = 0

N = 0 (ignore, since the number is positive), and {{{highlight_green(N = 2)}}} (the number you claim to be the answer).
