Question 671814

eight divided by the difference of a numer and 3 minus 7 divided by a number plus 3, equals 2 times the reciprocal of the difference of the number sqaured and 9. What is the number? is the problem and I'm having a hard time figuring out how to write out the last half of it.

Let the number be N
Then: {{{8/(N - 3) - 7/(N + 3) = 2(1/(N^2 - 9))}}}

{{{8/(N - 3) - 7/(N + 3) = 2/(N^2 - 9)}}}
8(N + 3) – 7(N – 3) = 2 ------ Multiplying by LCD, (N – 3)(N + 3), or {{{N^2 - 9}}}
8N + 24 – 7N + 21 = 2
8N – 7N + 45 = 2
N = 2 - 45

N, or number = {{{highlight_green(- 43)}}}
