Question 664755

a plumber charges $51 for 2 hours of work and $74.25 for 3/1/2 hours work. write an equation relating cost to number of hours worked

Let the time (in hours) be x, and the dollar amount, y

We then have 2 points: (2, 51) and (3.5, 74.25)

Using these 2 points, along with the slope formula, we get m, or slope = 15.5

Using the slope, and the point (2, 51) in the point-slope formula: {{{y - y[1] = m(x - x[1])}}}, we get:

{{{y - 51 = 15.5(x - 2)}}} ----- {{{y - 51 = 15.5x - 31}}} ----- {{{y = 15.5x + 20}}} ------ {{{highlight_green(C(x) = 15.5x + 20)}}}
