The domain of the relation is the set of values for which the relation is defined.  So if you pick a value for the independent variable and it maps to one or more relation values, then that value is in the domain, otherwise not.


The range is the set of values that the relation can attain.  If there is no value in the domain that causes the relation to be a given value, then that value is excluded from the range.  Another way to look at it is to take every possible value in the domain and create the set of relation values that result from every domain value.  That set is the range.
