Question 653709

carlos and his brother were born seven years apart. one of the boys is twice as old as the other boy. find the the ages of the brothers.
      Can you help set this problem up for me, and if you can give me a method to help solve linear equation and system word problems that would be great. Thank You for your time

Let the older brother's age be E
Then younger brother is E – 7 years-old
Also, E = 2(E – 7)
E = 2E – 14
E – 2E = - 14
- E = - 14
E, or age of older boy = {{{(- 14)/- 1}}}, or {{{highlight_green(14)}}} years

Younger brother is: 14 - 7, or {{{highlight_green(7)}}} years-old

You need to be adept at forming the equation from the word problem that’s presented. If you understand what the word problem is saying, and what it’s asking, then you should be able to formulate the equation and solve.
