Question 650873

I need your help please...
 Two trains leave Chicago at the same time traveling in opposite directions. One is going 60 miles per hour and the other is going 65 miles per hour. How long before they are 375 miles a part?"

Can you please show me how to set the problem up and how to work through it?

Thank you in advance.

Distance apart, divided by sum of their speeds, equals time taken to be specified distance apart, OR

{{{375/(60 + 65)}}}, or {{{375/125}}}, or {{{highlight_green(3)}}} hours

OR

Let time taken to be 375 miles apart be T
Distance traveled by slower train, plus distance traveled by faster train, equals distance trains are apart, OR

60T + 65T = 375

125T = 375

T, or time it takes for the 2 trains to be 375 miles apart = {{{375/125}}}, or {{{highlight_green(3)}}} hours
