Question 648826

Carol has 8 hours to spend on a mountain hike. She can walk up the trail at an average of 2 mph and can walk down at an average of 3 mph. How long should she plan to hike uphill before turning around?

Let the time she should plan to hike uphill be T
Then the time she should plan to hike downhill = 8 – T
Distance hiked uphill equals distance hiked downhill, OR
2T = 3(8 – T)
2T = 24 – 3T
2T + 3T = 24
5T = 24
T, or time she should plan to hike uphill = {{{24/5}}}, or {{{highlight_green(4.8)}}} hours

You can do the check!!
