Question 642493
A total of $20,000 is to be invested, some in bonds and some in certficates of deposit (CDs). If the amount invested in bonds is to exceed that in CDs by $2000, how much will be invested in each type of instrument?

Let C = the amount invested in CDs
then the amount invested in bonds will be C+2000.

From this information an equation can now be written

{{{C+C+2000=20000}}}
 or in words the amount invest in CDs plus the amount invested in bonds equals 20000.

This equation can be written as {{{2C+2000=20000}}}
Subtracting 2000 from both sides you get {{{2C=18000}}}
Dividing both sides by 2 you get {{{C=9000}}}

Therefore the amount invested in CDs is $9000 and the amount invested in bonds is $2000 more or $11000.
