Question 640210

I am in college algebra. My problem is:

Uncle Albert's estate is to be divided among his three nephews. The will specifies that Daniel receive 1/2 of the amount that Brian receives and that Raymond receive $1000.00 less than 1/3 of the amount that Brian receives. If the estate amounts to $25,400, then how much does each inherit?

Let amount that Brian should receive be B
Then Daniel should receive ˝B
Raymond should get: {{{(1/3)B - 1000}}}, or {{{(B/3) - 1000}}}

We now have: {{{B + (1/2)B + (B/3) - 1000 = 25400}}}
6B + 3B + 2B – 6,000 = 152,400 ------ Multiplying by LCD, 6
11B = 152,400 + 6,000
11B = 158,400

B, or amount Brian inherits = {{{158400/11}}}, or ${{{highlight_green(14400)}}}

Daniel inherits: ˝(14,400), or ${{{highlight_green(7200)}}}

Raymond inherits:  {{{(14400/3) - 1000}}}, or 4,800 – 1,000, or ${{{highlight_green(3800)}}}

You can do the check, I’m sure!!
