Question 639422
The students in my class are wearing 6 more green shirts than yellow shirts.
The ratio of green shirts to yellow shirts is 5:3.
Find the total number of shirts.
:
Find this using a multiplier,
let x = the multiplier
then
5x = no. of green shirts
3x = no. of yellow
and
8x = total number of shirts
:
"wearing 6 more green shirts than yellow shirts."
5x = 3x + 6
we know
{{{(5x)/(3x)}}} = {{{5/3}}}
replace 5x with (3x+6)
{{{(3x+6)/(3x)}}} = {{{5/3}}}
Cross multiply
5(3x) = 3(3x+6)
15x = 9x + 18
15x - 9x = 18
6x = 18
x = 18/6
x = 3 is the multiplier
therefore
8(3) = 24 total number of shirts
