Question 638839

Please help me solve this word problem: Sarah is twice as old as Ben. Ben is 2 years older than Mike. The sum of their ages is 26. How old is each? (I labeled Sarah A, Ben B and Mike C. I tried to make a formula of B^2+(C+2)=26, but I have no idea where to go from there.)

Let Ben's age be B
Then Sarah is 2B
Mike's age is B - 2

We then have:

B + 2B + B - 2 = 26

4B - 2 = 26

4B = 28

B, or Ben is {{{28/4}}}, or {{{highlight_green(7)}}} years-old

Sarah is 2(7), or {{{highlight_green(14)}}} years-old

Mike is 7 - 2, or {{{highlight_green(5)}}} years-old
