Question 638159

2m^2-m-15=0 quadratic problem, can you help me solve this step by step with text along side? Im having so many problems solving these types of problems, thanks and God Bless

{{{2m^2 - m - 15 = 0}}}

We're looking for factors of - 30 (c * a) whose sum is - 1 (b). These are: - 6 & 5, so replacement for b is: (- 6m + 5m)

{{{2m^2 - m - 15 = 0}}} now becomes:

{{{2m^2 - 6m + 5m - 15 = 0}}}

2m(m - 3) + 5(m - 3) = 0

(2m + 5)(m - 3) = 0

2m + 5 = 0 or m - 3 = 0

2m = - 5 or m = 0 + 3

{{{highlight_green(m = - 5/2)}}}, or {{{highlight_green(m = 3)}}}
