Question 636430

Find the value of x or y so that the line passing through the two points has the given Slope! PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS STEP BY STEP, I SUCK AT MATH
Problem: ( -3 , y ), ( -9 , -2 ); m = 1
also ( 7 , 5 ), ( x , 2 ); m = {{{3/4}}}

First of all, stop typing in caps. It's the equivalent of shouting!!

Slope form: {{{(y[2] - y[1])/(x[2] - x[1])}}}

Since slope = 1, then we can say that: {{{(y[2] - y[1])/(x[2] - x[1]) = 1}}}

Now, substituting coordinates, (- 3, y) and (- 9, - 2), we get:
{{{(- 2 - y)/(- 9 - - 3) = 1}}}

{{{(- 2 - y)/(- 9 + 3) = 1}}}

{{{(- 2 - y)/(- 6) = 1}}}

- 2 – y = - 6 ----- Cross-multiplying
- y = - 6 + 2
- y = - 4
y = {{{(- 4)/- 1}}}, or {{{highlight_green(4)}}}

You can apply the same concept when doing the 2nd problem.
