Question 635542
<font face="Times New Roman" size="+2">

If *[tex \LARGE x] is the measure of the width of the walkway, then the over all length must be *[tex \LARGE 2x\ +\ 15] and the overall width must be *[tex \LARGE 2x\ +\ 10] (because the deck is on all four sides).

Since area is given by length times width:

*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ (2x\ +\ 15)(2x\ +\ 10)\ =\ 234]

FOIL the two binomials, then put the quadratic into standard form. Solve for *[tex \LARGE x] but discard the negative root. (unless you want to build the deck out of anti-matter and give it a negative dimension that is).

John
*[tex \LARGE e^{i\pi}\ +\ 1\ =\ 0]
My calculator said it, I believe it, that settles it
