Question 632723
Ed rode his bike for 2 more hours than Ann rode hers. Ed traveled 24 miles and Ann traveled 6 miles. If they both rode at the same speed, for what length of time did Ed ride his bike?

Let Ed's time to ride 24 miles be T

Then Ann's time to travel 6 miles is: T - 2

Since they traveled at the same speed, then: {{{24/T = 6/(T - 2)}}}

24(T - 2) = 6T ------ Cross-multiplying

24T - 48 = 6T

18T = 48

T, or time taken by Ed to travel 24 miles = {{{48/18}}}, or {{{highlight_green(2&2/3)}}} hours, or {{{highlight_green(2_hours_and_40_minutes)}}}
