Question 631560

how do i factor 8x^2-24x+18? i'm quite confused and can't seem to find a solution!

{{{8x^2 - 24x + 18}}}
{{{2(4x^2 - 12x + 9)}}} ------ Factoring out GCF, 2

We're now looking for 2 factors whose product is + 36 (c * a, or 9 * 4), and whose sum is - 12 (b)

These two factors are: {{{- 6}}} and {{{- 6}}}, which will now give us: {{{- 6x}}} and {{{- 6x}}} to replace {{{- 12x}}} in the trinomial

We now have: 2({{{4x^2 - 6x - 6x + 9}}})

We now factor the first two expressions, {{{4x^2 - 6x}}} and {{{- 6x + 9}}}

2[{{{2x(2x - 3) - 3(2x - 3)}}}]

This now gives us: 2(2x - 3)(2x - 3), or {{{highlight_green(2(2x - 3)^2)}}}
