Question 627437
Let x = length of first piece and y be length of the second (longer) piece

The pipe is 90 cm, so {{{x+y=90}}}

"one piece is 6 cm shorter than the other.", so {{{y = x+6}}}

Now use these equations to find x and y.

{{{x+y=90}}}

{{{x+x+6=90}}}

{{{2x+6=90}}}

{{{2x=90-6}}}

{{{2x=84}}}

{{{x=84/2}}}

{{{x=42}}}

So the first piece is <font color="red">42 cm</font>

{{{y = x+6}}}

{{{y = 42+6}}}

{{{y = 48}}}

and the second piece is <font color="red">48 cm</font>
