Restrictions on the variable:  Set the denominator polynomial equal to zero and solve.  The two roots will be restricted values of the variable, and will remain restricted values even after the rational expression has been simplified.


Simplify:  Factor both the numerator and denominator polynomials.  Eliminate any factors common to both numerator and denominator.
