{{{x = (-(1) +- sqrt( (1)^2-4(1)(-1) ))/(2(1))}}} Plug in  {{{A=1}}}, {{{B=1}}}, and {{{C=-1}}}



{{{x = (-1 +- sqrt( 1-4(1)(-1) ))/(2(1))}}} Square {{{1}}} to get {{{1}}}. 



{{{x = (-1 +- sqrt( 1--4 ))/(2(1))}}} Multiply {{{4(1)(-1)}}} to get {{{-4}}}



{{{x = (-1 +- sqrt( 1+4 ))/(2(1))}}} Rewrite {{{sqrt(1--4)}}} as {{{sqrt(1+4)}}}



{{{x = (-1 +- sqrt( 5 ))/(2(1))}}} Add {{{1}}} to {{{4}}} to get {{{5}}}



{{{x = (-1 +- sqrt( 5 ))/(2)}}} Multiply {{{2}}} and {{{1}}} to get {{{2}}}. 



{{{x = (-1+sqrt(5))/(2)}}} or {{{x = (-1-sqrt(5))/(2)}}} Break up the expression.  



So the solutions are {{{x = (-1+sqrt(5))/(2)}}} or {{{x = (-1-sqrt(5))/(2)}}}
