Question 615393
You find averages by adding the numbers together and then dividing by how many numbers there are.
These numbers are fractions so it will be a bit of a pain because adding them requires the effort of finding the common denominator and then changing the denominators to the common one. And then we'd have to divide a fraction!?
We can make the problem easier if we realize that all of the fractions, in decimal form, are terminating (i.e. non-repeating) decimals:
1/2 = 0.5
2/5 = 0.4
3/4 = 0.75
4/5 = 0.8
Adding and dividing decimals is must easier. So this is how we will proceed. Adding we get:
2.45
dividing by 4 we get:
0.6125
This is the average.
If you feel that the4 answer should be in fraction form, then we can convert this decimal back to a fraction:
{{{0.6125 = 6125/10000 = 245/400 = 49/80}}}
P.S. The answer works out the same if you do all the work in fraction form.
