Question 609005
how many square feet of aluminum materials will be needed in order to construct an open top right cylindrical tank which is 6 feet high and has a diameter of 2 feet, if only 5% of the total surface of the cylinder is to be allowed for waste?
:
The equation for the surface area of an open top cylinder
S.A. = {{{2pi*r*h}}} + {{{pi*r^2}}}
:
However the round bottom will be cut out of a 2 by 2 ft square, which would have some waste.
The side would be a rectangle so no waste there.
:
This cylinder will have a radius of half the diameter (1 ft) and a height of 6 ft
S.a. = side + square for the bottom
S.A. = {{{2pi*1*6}}} + 2^2
S.A. = {{{12pi + 4}}}
S.A. = 37.7 + 4
S.A. = 41.7 sq/ft required
:
Waste from the round bottom: 4 - {{{pi*1^2}}} = .86 sq/ft wasted
{{{.86/41.7}}} *100 ~ 2% wasted
