Multiply rate for the first part of the trip times the time for the first part of the trip to find out how much distance he traveled for the first part.  Then multiply the rate for the second part of the trip times the time for the second part of the trip to find the distance for that part.  Add these two distances then divide by the total time for the whole trip.
