You don't put in the value of 8 until you have created the function composition.  Substitute the definition of *[tex \LARGE g] for every *[tex \LARGE x] in the definition of *[tex \LARGE f].  Put another way, interpret *[tex \LARGE f\,\circ\,g] as *[tex \LARGE f\left(g(x)\right)]. Once you simplify, THEN substitute 8 for *[tex \LARGE x] in the simplified definition of *[tex \LARGE f\,\circ\,g].
