Question 578050
"The difference of two numbers is 89. One number is six less than triple the other. What are the two numbers?"

x = one number
3x - 6 = other number {one is six less than triple the other}

3x - 6 - x = 89 {their difference is 89}
2x - 6 = 89 {combined like terms}
2x = 95 {added 6 to both sides}
x = 47.5 {divided both sides by 2}
3x - 6 = 136.5 {substituted 47.5, in for x, into 3x - 6}

47.5 and 136.5 are the two numbers
