Question 54135
The goal is to get the x all by itself in the middle, whatever you do to the middle to get x by itself you have to do to each end.
{{{-1<=3-2x<11}}}
{{{-1-3<=-3+3-2x<11-3}}}
{{{-4<=-2x<8}}}
{{{-4/-2>=-2x/-2>8/-2}}}When you multiply or divide by a negative sign, flip the inequality signs.
{{{2>=x>-4}}}Write in smaller to larger order. Keep an eye on the inequality signs. They still need to point to the same numbers.
{{{highlight(-4<x<=2)}}}
This means that x is greater than (but not equal to)-4 and less than or equal to 2. Equal gets a bracket and not equal gets a parenthesis:
Interval notation: (-4,2]
Notice the similarity between the interval notation and the number line graph:
Graph:
<------(============]--->
-6,-5,-4,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,4
