Pick a point that is NOT on the boundary line.  If the boundary line (the line defined by the equation you get when you substitute an equals sign for your inequality sign) does NOT go through the origin, then the point (0,0) is VERY handy for this purpose.  Otherwise choose something with small integers, like (1,1) or (0,1), whatever.


Substitute the *[tex \Large x]-coordinate of the point you chose for the *[tex \Large x] in your inequality.  Substitute the *[tex \Large y]-coordinate of the point you chose for the *[tex \Large y] in the inequality.  Then do all of the indicated arithmetic.


If the result is a true statement, then shade in the side of boundary line that contains your test point.  If the result is a false statement, shade in the other side.
