Question 552389
A bag of 2 1/2 pounds of walnuts for 2.50 US dollars? That's a good price.
Buy two bags. That way you will get 5 pounds for $5. It will be one dollar per pound.
IN GENERAL
To find the price per pound you divide the price by the number of pounds. Decimals, fractions, and mixed numbers make calculations a little harder.
You can double the amount and price, if it makes calculations easier. (you can also triple it or quadruple it).
You can convert mixed number to fractions, and prices to cents. Decimals can always be written as fractions. Some fractions convert easily to decimals, which is good if you are going to use a calculator to divide. You could use
{{{2&1/2=2+1/2=4/2+1/2=5/2}}} or {{{2&1/2=2.5}}} or {{{2.50=2+50/100=2+1/2=5/2}}}
It's even worse when they give you the amount as 20 ounces (1 1/4 pounds), or 6 ounces. In those cases, if I have no calculator or pencil and paper handy, I find myself finding what the price would be for 2 ounces, and then I multiply by whatever I need to multiply to get the price of one pound.
EXAMPLE
If 1 pound and 9 ounces of something cost $6.25, you could calculate
1 pound and 9 ounces = {{{1&9/16}}} pounds = {{{25/16}}} pounds
Then you can calculate the price per pound of that something (in $) as
{{{6.25/(25/16)}}} = {{{6.25*(16/25)}}} = {{{6.25*16/25}}} = {{{4}}}
Or you could calculate the price per pound in cents as
{{{625/(25/16)}}} = {{{625*(16/25)}}} = {{{625*16/25}}} = {{{400}}}
