Question 538037
The denominator of a fraction is 4 more than the numerator if both the numerator and denominator are increased by 1 the the resulting fraction equals 1/2 find the original fraction
:
Let x = the numerator
then
(x+4) = the denominator
:
{{{((x+1))/((x+4)+1)}}} = {{{((x+1))/((x+5))}}} = {{{1/2}}}
Cross multiply
2(x+1) = (x+5)
2x + 2 = x + 5
2x - x = 5 - 2
x = 3 is the numerator
then
3+4 = 7 is the denominator
and
{{{3/7}}} is the original fraction
