125:1 means "125 of this thing is the same as 1 of that thing"  In other words 1 whole thing on the right side is comprised of 125 pieces of whatever is represented by the left side.


Look at it like a pizza.  The chef cuts the pie into eight equal pieces giving you 8:1, that is 8 pieces is the same as 1 whole pizza.  So 1 piece is how much of a whole pie?
