Some books and teachers use the letters FOIL to help students remember to multiply the First terms then the Outer terms then the Inner terms then the Last terms.  Maybe that will help you too.  After that you add any like terms.  It helps to put varibles in alphabetical order when you multiply them so that you can easily recognize your like terms.
