Question 527615
A truck enters a highway driving 60 mph. A car enters the highway at the same place 12 minutes later and drives 66 mph in the same direction. From the time the car enters the highway, how long will it take the car to pass the truck?
---------------
Truck DATA:
rate = 60 mph ; distance = x miles ; time = d/r = x/60 hrs.
-------------
Car DATA:
rate = 66 mph ; distance = x miles ; time = d/r = x/66 hrs.
----
Equation:
truck time - 12 min = car time
x/60 - 1/5 = x/66
----
Multiply thru 5*60*66
5*66x - 60*66 = 5*60x
----
30x = 60*66
x = 132 miles
---
Time = 132/66 = 2 hrs. (car time)
