The sides of a cube do not have linear measure.  The word "side" when applied to a cube or other prism refer to the faces or facets of the solid figure.  I believe that you meant that the edges of the new box were twice as long as the edges of the old box.


You can actually answer the question in general.  Let's say that we start with a box that has edges that measure *[tex \Large x].  Then the larger box must have edges that measure *[tex \Large 2x].  The volume of the small box is then *[tex \Large x^3] and the volume of the larger box is *[tex \Large (2x)^3\ =\ 2^3\,\cdot\,x^3\ =\ 8x^3].  And it is clear that the larger cube has 8 times the volume of the smaller.
