Question 513106
<font face="Times New Roman" size="+2">

Let *[tex \Large x] represent the number of cubic feet of soil that is 35% clay. Then *[tex \Large 10\ -\ x] is the amount of 10% clay (because the two amounts must total 10 cubic feet.) 10 cubic feet of 17% clay soil has 10 times 0.17 = 1.7 cubic feet of pure clay. *[tex \Large x] cubic feet of 35% clay soil has *[tex \Large 0.35x] cubic feet of pure clay, and *[tex \Large 10\ -\ x] cubic feet of 10% clay soil has *[tex \Large 0.10(10\ -\ x)] cubic feet of pure clay. The amount of pure clay in the 35% soil plus the amount of clay in the 10% soil must sum to the amount of clay in the 17% soil, namely 1.7 cubic feet. Hence:

*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ 0.35x\ +\ 0.1(10\ -\ x)\ =\ 1.7]

Solve for *[tex \Large x], then calculate *[tex \Large 10\ -\ x]

John
*[tex \LARGE e^{i\pi} + 1 = 0]
My calculator said it, I believe it, that settles it
