4x + ky = 4

so first step is to make coefficient determinant vanish
that is 2k+4=0
k=-2...we find that then 
2x-y=3
4x-2y=4...which with the given constants are inconsistent as eqn.1 *2 gives
4x-2y=6...where as 
4x-2y=4 as given.hence they have no solution for k=-2
