Question 50650
I think I know what you mean.

{{{ (3x^2+17xy+20y^2)/(3x^2-xy-10y^2) }}}

To reduce a fraction, it must be written in factored form. To do this, you must factor the two trinomials, and I must say this is the hard part!!

{{{ ((3x + 5y )*(x  +  4y))/((3x +5y)*(x-2y))}}}

Notice that the factors of (3x+5y) divide out, leaving
{{{ (x+4y)/(x-2y)}}}

If you need help factoring these types of trinomials, I have an entire lesson devoted to this on my website. Click on my tutor name anywhere in algebra.com, then look for "Basic Algebra", "Samples from Basic Algebra: One Step at a Time", "Chapter 2", "Advanced Trinomial Factoring". You will find an entire lesson with explanation, examples, exercises, and answers.
