Elimination works best when two of your x-coefficients are opposites of each other (e.g. if you have a 2x in one equation and -2x in another). If not, multiplying one equation by a constant can help.


Substitution works best when one of your coefficients is 1. Then solve for this variable (e.g. x = ...) and substitute that expression into another equation.
