Question 486358
In a collection of 60 coins, the number of half dollars is 1/3 the number of dimes. The number of quarters is 10 less than the number of dimes, find the value of the collection.

total coins ---- 60

dimes = x
half dollar = (1/3)*x
Quarters ----(x-10)

x+x/3 + x-10=60

{{{2x+x/3 -10=60}}}

whenever you have such an addition of fraction the simplest step I will try to teach you
Find the LCD of the denominator and multiply the entire equation by the LCD.

Here the LCD is 3

3*2x+(x/3)*3 -10*3=60*3
6x+x-30=180
7x-30=180
7x= 210
/7
x=30 the number of dimes

Half dollar = 30 * x/3= 10

quarter = x-10 ==> 30-10=20
