That certainly depends on what you mean by "a number."  As posed, the answer to your question is "Sometimes"


Select a natural number and add it to itself, then the sum is certainly greater than the original.


Select zero and add it to itself.  You get zero, so the sum is the same as the original number.


Select a negative number and add it to itself, then the sum is smaller than the original number.
