Question 470488
<font face="Times New Roman" size="+2">

Let *[tex \Large x] represent Chris' age. Let *[tex \Large y] represent the father's age. Then *[tex \Large x\ -\ 1] was Chris' age a year ago and *[tex \Large y\ - 1] represents the father's age a year ago.

*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ y\ =\ 2x]

*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ y\ -\ 1\ =\ 3(x\ -\ 1)]

Solve by substitution

*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ 2x\ -\ 1\ =\ 3x\ -\ 3]

*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ x\ =\ 2]

Hmmm, interesting. When Chris is 2 years old, his father is 4 years old. His father was 2 years old when Chris was born. Makes sense if Chris and his father are dogs.
